Why Your Website Is Costing You Clients (And What to Do About It)

Very few small-business websites are made for converting leads. They are made to look good as digital business cards without much thought put into driving calls or generating enquiries. We have performed many audits for UK small- and medium-sized businesses. Below are the eight costliest things found and exactly how to fix them.

The Truth About Small-Business Websites

When asked about the reason behind having a website, the majority of business owners say that it is for the "online presence". It sounds fine but is also the root of why they underperform.

Websites are sales tools, like any other sales tool. They should work and be effective. Effective websites help prospects go from "thinking about this business" to "making a call".

96%of website visitors leave without making a call, but this can be cut in half with the right changes

The percentage might be frightening but this is not set in stone. It means that a site's performance could be drastically improved with the right changes. In fact, we've seen clients' bounce rate drop by 50% and their enquiries double with some of the fixes mentioned below.

Now let's get into the eight most common website mistakes: those we see very frequently with UK tradesmen, beauty salons, and professional services providers.

Mistake #1: No Call to Action Above the Fold

Above-the-fold is one of the most valuable areas on a website. It is often wasted on generic imagery and poor taglines.

When coming to a website, a potential client should immediately be told: what this business does, where it operates, and what to do next. Otherwise, there's a risk to lose many visitors at this very point.

How to fix it

Your home page should feature an accurate service and location. The phone number should always be in the top-right corner. There should be only one visible CTA button: "Call now" or "Get a quote". The above-the-fold content is crucial.

Mistake #2: Slow Load Speed On Mobile Devices

More than 70% of visits come from mobiles. Sites that take more than 3 seconds to load result in losing 53% of their visitors due to Google's data.

Typical culprits are poor image optimisation, bloated builders, compressed videos playing above the fold, or cheap hosting with inability to handle surges of traffic.

How to fix it

Run a site-speed test with PageSpeed Insights (Google). Scores below 50 on mobile side indicate critical issues. The most efficient fixes include compressing images to WebP format, removing plugins, using quality hosting (SiteGround or Kinsta for UK businesses), and removing auto-playing videos above the fold.

Mistake #3: Lack of Trust Signals

Every person visiting your website wonders the same thing: can I trust this business? Unfortunately, most businesses fail to prove their reliability.

Trust factors such as customer testimonials, accreditations, pictures of your work, photos of a team, and years of running your business play the key role in converting doubts into trust. Without these factors, even an aesthetically pleasing site is not going to perform well.

How to fix it: each service page needs:

  • At least three customer testimonials with people's names and locations
  • Relevant accreditations (Gas Safe, NAPIT, NHF, FCA etc.) displayed with logos
  • A stat about completed projects or years of operating
  • Actual photos of projects or of a team (stock photos don't inspire trust)

Mistake #4: One Generic "Services" Page

That is another big SEO mistake which causes a loss of traffic. A single-page list of all the services a business offers ("Plumbing, boilers, bathrooms, heating") does not allow targeting proper keywords effectively.

Google wants different pages dedicated to different specialities. Thus, when searching for "boiler replacement in Leeds", a prospect won't find his or her way to your business.

How to fix it

Make pages for your main services (for example, plumbing or roofing). Each of them must:

  • Target a certain keyword (such as "boiler replacement Leeds")
  • Be at least 600 words long
  • Have an FAQ section
  • Feature relevant services-related testimonials
  • Have a proper call to action

Mistake #5: Making Contact Harder Than Needed

Websites often hide their phone number in the footer, put a contact form on each page with many required fields, don't offer the "contact us via WhatsApp" possibility, and lack booking options. Each of these actions makes people leave the site and seek for a competitor whose contact details are easier to find.

How to fix it

Ensure the phone number appears in the header, hero section, after each service description, and in the footer. It should be a clickable link for quick dialling on smartphones. Add a "WhatsApp us" button. About 78% of Brits prefer contacting businesses via WhatsApp. Lastly, implement an online booking system if your service requires appointments.

Mistake #6: Talking About Yourself, Not Your Customers

When looking for a plumber or a hairdresser, people think about their problems and how to resolve them. Many websites describe themselves in such a manner: "We are a family company founded in 2003 that provides excellent services in our field". These websites tell absolutely nothing to their visitors.

How to fix it

By focusing on customers and their problems, you will show that your business cares.

Mistake #7: Lack of Local SEO Factors

Being visible in local searches ("plumbers near me", "hair salon [name of a town]") requires certain signals which many small businesses tend to forget about. Omitting those signals may prevent customers from finding your website in searches related to their location.

How to fix it

  • Ensure Name, Address, and Phone number appear in the footer and on the contact page
  • Embed a Google map on your contact page
  • Implement "Local Business" schema markup on your home page
  • Create separate location pages if your business serves multiple towns
  • Verify and regularly update your Google Business Profile and link it to your website

All the fixes above are free and increase local searches visibility drastically.

Mistake #8: Missing Content That Builds Trust Before Contacting

A website featuring only services and the possibility to contact does not exploit the power of content marketing. Today's customers spend time researching before reaching out, especially when it comes to expensive services such as boiler installations, web development, legal assistance etc.

The more quality content your business provides addressing all the doubts of your potential customers, the more trusted you become in their eyes. Besides, your business increases its SEO visibility and becomes a subject for AI-powered assistants to recommend (like ChatGPT or Claude).

How to fix it

Create a blog and write at least one blog post per month, answering real client's questions (examples: "How much does it cost to renovate the bathroom in [name of the town]?" and "What should I ask my electrician before hiring him?"). These posts stay active and useful forever.

The Website Audit Checklist

Go through the checklist below. Every "no" means that a particular conversion factor is missing.

  • Phone number appears in the top navigation on all pages
  • Homepage headline includes a location and a service
  • Mobile loading speed under three seconds (check PageSpeed Insights)
  • At least five customer testimonials shown on home page
  • Dedicated pages created for each core service
  • Phone number is a clickable link
  • Option to contact via WhatsApp or book a meeting online
  • Actual images of your work and/or your team (avoid stock images)
  • Relevant accreditations with logos are used on the website
  • Clear business address and service area mentioned
  • Google My Business Profile is verified and up-to-date
  • At least three blog posts published in the last six months

How to Proceed Next

If you find several of the issues described above, proceed with addressing them in a specific order to make maximum progress.

  • Week 1: Add phone number to header on all pages and make it clickable. Add "Book a Quote" or "Contact Us" above the fold.
  • Month 1: Make dedicated service pages for your top three services. Add customer testimonials on them.
  • Months 2-3: Sort out slow-loading times, add Name, Address, and Phone number to footer and optimise GMB profile.
  • Long-term: Publish at least one blog post a month about a real customer question.

The approach is cumulative and allows making the most of each step.
