The Backlink Myth Keeping Accountants and Solicitors Out of AI Search Recommendations

Domain rating and backlink count still move the needle in Google rankings, but they tell an AI assistant nothing it can quote. Here is what actually gets accountants and solicitors named instead.

4 min readUpdated 2026

A conveyancing partner spends eleven months building a stack of guest posts and local citations, watches the firm's domain rating climb from 18 to 41, and still hears nothing back when a client says they asked ChatGPT for a solicitor first. The rating went up. The mentions did not follow.

The SEO Habit That Does Not Transfer to AI Search

For fifteen years, backlinks have been the closest thing search has to a credit score. More links from more trusted sites meant a higher position on the results page, so agencies built entire retainers around acquiring them. That habit is now getting carried, unchanged, into how firms try to appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview, and it is largely wasted effort there.

1. What A Backlink Actually Measures

A backlink is a vote of trust from one domain to another, counted and weighted by how much trust the linking domain itself has. Google's ranking algorithm reads that vote as a signal about the whole site, not about any single fact on any single page. It tells the algorithm your firm is probably credible. It does not tell the algorithm what your fee for a straightforward will is, how many years your lead conveyancer has practised, or which court your firm appears in most often.

2. What An AI Assistant Checks Instead

When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a question like who handles probate disputes near me, it is not running a ranking algorithm across the whole web and returning the ten highest scoring domains. It is pulling specific, checkable claims off individual pages and assembling an answer from them. A page's domain rating never enters that extraction step. What enters it is whether the page states a named specialist, a fee range, a regulator number, or a response time in words the model can lift directly into its answer.

What backlinks tell GoogleWhat AI assistants pull from your page
This domain is broadly trustworthyThis named partner handles probate disputes
This site ranks above competitors for this keywordThis firm's SRA number is 123456
Other sites consider this content worth linking toThis firm quotes a fixed fee for a straightforward will

3. Where This Leaves A Firm With A Strong Backlink Profile

A high domain rating still helps you rank in traditional Google results, and traditional Google results still send real enquiries. The mistake is assuming that work also covers AI search, then leaving the page itself vague because the domain already looks authoritative. A firm can have a domain rating of 50 and a page that says our experienced team handles a wide range of matters, and an AI assistant will skip that page for a domain rated 20 that states a name, a number, and a fee.

4. The Four Facts Worth Building Into Every Service Page

  • The named specialist for the matter, not the firm generally: a partner's name attached to probate, not just probate services
  • The regulator number, stated plainly, so the claim of being regulated is a fact rather than a phrase
  • A fee figure or a fee range for at least the most common matters
  • A stated response time for a first enquiry, in hours or days rather than as soon as possible

A backlink tells a search engine your firm is trustworthy. It never tells an AI assistant what your firm actually does, costs, or promises.

The Takeaway

Keep building backlinks if organic Google traffic still matters to the firm, it does. Just stop expecting that work to carry over into AI search. The page itself has to state the specialist, the number, the fee, and the response time in words a model can quote, because that is the only credit score ChatGPT and Perplexity actually check.
